Moving? Here are some helpful tips!

Moving can be a stressful process for many. From sorting your belongings to the piling boxes, the work can feel endless. The trick is to divide your work in order to not become overwhelmed.

If you don’t have a plan of action to divide and conquer your move, try some of these helpful tips.

8 Weeks Before the Move

8 weeks before your move it would be helpful to focus on the big picture. How big is the place in which you are moving? Which big furniture items will fit? Which will not?

  • Create a file to organize all information pertaining to your move including receipts, quotes, to-do lists, floor plan, etc.
  • If desired, call Caring Transitions to set up a consultation for a relocation package
  • Start determining what furniture items you want to take (Caring Transitions can create a customized floor plan of your new space)

6 Weeks Before the Move

For the 6 week mark you should start to appropriately declutter your home to match the capacity of your new home. Get rid of the things that you no longer use. This will make packing a lot easier and less overwhelming.

  • Set moving date
  • Go through closets and donate clothing that doesn’t fit/don’t wear
  • Go through the bathroom and throw away old or expired products
  • Go through the kitchen and throw away old or expired food
  • Set up arrangements for items family is taking
  • If relocating to a new city, ask for doctor referrals
  • Gather legal and financial records in one secure location
  • If moving a pet, make sure your pet is up to date on its shots and have their medical files
  • Call your insurance to arrange transfer of insurance to new residence

4 Weeks Before the Move

Try going through your personal documents and shred what you no longer need.

  • Shred personal/financial documents that you will not be moving
  • File change of address with Post Office
  • Prepare a list of friends and family to notify of your move
  • Notify utilities of your change of address

2 Weeks Before the Move

This is the week of the little details. Try not to stress over the move, focus on new beginnings.

  • Reserve elevator, if necessary for move in or move out dates
  • If applicable confirm with Caring Transitions the dates for packing and moving
  • Likewise check with Caring Transitions about moving house plants, medical equipment, chemicals, propane tanks, food items
  • Review inventory of items that will be moving
  • Return library books
  • Collect items from cleaners or from repair
  • Plan meals to help empty refrigerator
  • Purchase paper plates, cups, and plastic utensils while your dishes are packed
  • Have at least two weeks of medication
  • Find a new pharmacy if necessary and have Rx transferred
  • Make arrangement for payment (consider whether or not you wish to tip the movers)

Week of the Move

Now it is time to set aside everyday essentials and valuables.

  • Set aside valuable and other items you will be keeping with you during the move (jewelry, money, checkbook, glasses, cell phone, charger, medications)
  • Set aside 1-2 days clothing and toiletries

Two Days Before the Move

Congratulations! You are nearly there. There are just a few more things to consider.
